SABOL - I have been trying
to locate my paternal ancestors, who were of Slovak descent. My
great-grandfahter's last name was originally spelled: Andreas Hrbac. He
came to the USA approximately 1884, or 1881. He was married twice. His
first wife and children died in a cholera epidemic. His second marriage
was to Alzbeta Marton. Her father;s name was Michael Marton. Andreas
came to the US first and sent for his wife Alzbeta and young son
Andreas, who was 10 years' old at the time. Andreas II married Anna
Sabol, who came to the USA on her 18th birthday from Slovakia, which
was under the rule of Austria-Hungary at the time. Her parents were:
George and Anna (Kochera) Sabol. The Hrbacs still have relatives in
Slovkia; where they are is unknown. The Hrbac's religion is Lutheran.
If anyone can provide me with any information in regard to the families
of: Hrbac, Sabol, Marton, or Kochera, it would be greatly appreciated.
The Hrbac's changed the spelling of their name from Hrbac, to Hrbac,
then to Harbach. Help please; I would love to find relatives and
information on where my father's family originated. Respectfully, June

SAJLER - I search for the
ancestors of my wife in Slovakia. Their name was Stanga, they were
masons and they came from the hamlet Carasole in the community of
Roveredo, Grisons, Switzerland. They worked for count Pálffy at Bojnice
in the second half of the 17th century. They first lived in Opatovce,
then in Nováky. I especially search for Michael Stanga who was born
26th September 1740 in Nováky as a catholic and died 28th November 1811
as a lutheran mason in Rimavská Sobota. His parents, Michael and Anna
Stanga are not mentioned, only his age of 74 years (recte 71 years). At
the age of 50 years he had a son Michael, born 11th October 1790, with
Susanna, but when Michael married 14th September 1812 Sophia Hasfay is
mentioned as his mother. (Probably they had also two daughters:
Susanna, *cca 1779, and Maria, *cca 1785). 4th April 1800 died his wife
Elisabeth Sajler at the age of 36 years. With her he had a daughter
Elisabeth. 22th November 1802 he married Maria Waszka or Watzka. It
seems that Michael Stanga stayed in another, probably lutheran village
in his younger years. It is probable that there he married Sophia
Hasfay. Dr. Walter Büchi, Äschenthürlistrasse 18 b, CH-6030 Ebikon,

SAMUELOVICS - I have family
that was born in Kiralyhelmec Hungary. Here is what I know of my family
history so far: My grandfather's father's mother, Yetta Jacobowitz, was
born in Kiralyhelmec Hungary. I know that her sister Dinusz Jacobowitz
(1866-1944) married Ignac Nathan Jakubovic (1863-1944) and both Dinusz
and Ignac were transported to Auschwitz and killed upon arrival.
Basically...this is all I know at this point! There were other siblings
of Yetta that we do not know what happened to and who I am trying to
find out about. We have their birth year but not year of death
which makes me think they might have been killed during the Holocaust
(although I could be completely off on this thought...). The names and
year of birth are as follows: Tertsa Jacobowitz b. 1867, Hani
Jacobowitz b. 1867, Rose Jacobowitz 1871-1942 (unknown cause of death).
She married Charles Goldstein (1866-1944, also cause of death unknown),
Sadie Jacobowitz b 1873, married Max Pollak (birth and death dates
unknown), Aaron Jacobowitz b 1874, married Regina Geller (b. 1880,
death date unknown). The parents of Yetta and these other siblings are
Regina Samuelovics (1840-1923) and Ignatz Jacobowitz (1835-1895). There
was also one other brother but he, along with Yetta and her husband are
all known to have emigrated to the United States before the war. These
other siblings may or may not have been in Kiralyhelmec during the war
but that is my best guess as of now. Jen Selba, e-mail (2010-05-03)

1890 in Muráň. He immigrated to the U.S. around 1905, lived in Lorain

SAPIK (Trebišov, Slovakia – Trenton, NJ,

Czapik came to America during the 1890s and settled in Trenton, NJ.
They were from Trebišov and their religion is listed on my
grandfather's birth certificate (also John Michael Sapik born 1906 in
Trenton) as "Greek Catholic." The only other things I know about them
is that they supposedly came over to America on a ship from Germany and
they died in some sort of epidemic in New Jersey during the early
1900s. They left seven children as orphans, one of whom was my
grandfather. I went to the cemetery at St. Mary's in
Trenton (which has now changed to a different form of Catholicism -
perhaps
Ukrainian?) and there are some Czapiks buried there, but I didn't
recognize
the names and they didn't match with the other information I have. Then
too many of the tombstones are enscribed in cyrillic, which I cannot
read.

SETEGENA (Starina) - I am doing genealogy
research on my wife's Slovak families. My wife's father Michael
Setegena, b. Sept. 21,1888 in Starina, came to the USA in 1907. In the
USA he adopted the name of Stagney. His brother Peter and some sisters
also came separately to America. My wife's mother was Julianna Misik b.
June 20, 1890 in Vyšná Rybnica. She came to the USA in 1906. A brother
John and sister Mary
also came separately to America. A brother, George remained in Slovakia
and was last known to be working at a stamping plant in Michalovce (?)
– at age 64 (abt. 1978). While I have some information on these
families,
research has been difficult because the old folks are gone and no one
now speaks Slovak. We have been trying to match up what we know
with some
Slovak families now in Allentown, PA. These families were Misik,
Mishock
Motsiks etc. My wife's folks considered thes families as related. Would
enjoy making contact and possibly sharing the lives of these American
immigrants with relatives still living in Slovakia. Gerald E.

SCHONFELD - My
family emigrated from Galicia to Slovakia in the early 19th century or
perhaps the late 18th century. I have been told that the name was
Moskovits prior to Schonfeld. The earliest name I have is Eliezer,
father of Moshe Schonfeld. Eliezer was a manager for Grof Csaky, and he
must have performed well since the Grof rewarded him with much land
around Habura and Palota. Moses (Mose) was born in 1807, probably
in Habura. He lived in Habura
and had four children there, when he moved his family to Medzilaborce
(he
had additional children after moving to Medzilaborce). Mose had a
brother
Schia who was born about 1798, and he possibly had another brother
Mendel.
He may have had additional siblings as well. Mose is known to have
married the daughter of a famous Hasidic Rabbi, Rabbi Zvi Elimelech
Spira originally of Dynow, Galicia. Both Sarah and Mose were born in
1810 or earlier. Their tombstones can be found in the Jewish cemetery
in Medzilaborce. Louis Schonfeld, 5553 Broadview Road, Cleveland, OH

SCHROBER - I am researching
my family roots in Slovakia. From old family stories I understand my
great grandfather immigrated to the United States in the late 1800’s or
early 1900. His name was John Schrober (the American spelling, the
original spelling was Šrobár). Family stories and legends claims on our
family background include: 1. Both my great grandfather and his brother
were revolutionists. 2. My great grandfathers brothers name was
Lawrence and he was educated as a medical doctor. He may even been a
director or president at a medical university. 3. Lawrence may have
been an early minister of Slovakia after the revolution and involved in
government until the fall to the Russians after WWII. 4. My grandfather
was “smuggled” out of prison before the revolution and sent to America.
5. Their father was a prominent business man and town mayor. 6. They
had a large family with several being priests and nuns. I am interested
in any information. Mark Pataky, e-mail (2008-01-10)

SCHWARZ - I was born in
Bratislava in 1948 but came to Australia when my parents emigrated here
in 1950. My father, Otto Schwarz, was President of the Slovak
Association here in Australia for many years. My mother's maiden name
was Albeta Emilia Lichtner. My ancesters fall into two distinct groups.
On my father's side his family came originally from Gmunden, Austria.
His grandfather (Michael Schwarz) and other relatives moved from
Austria to Harmanec in the 1890's and the family lived there or in the
Banska Bystrica area until the 1950's. After my father immigrated to
the West in 1948 his immediate family moved to Kosice where they still
live. My grandparents and some uncles and aunts are buried there. My
mother was born in the village of Tesáre nad Žitavou (Tesárske Mlyňany)
in 1920 to an Ondrej Lichtner and Helena Solčianska. Her father's
surname is German in origin but I have no further information on her
family's origins. Emma Power, Canberra, Australia, e-mail (2009-04-27)

SISOLAK - My great
grandfather Vendelinus Vinka was the son of Emericus Vinka and Anna
Majzun born in Zavod (No. 119), Bratislava, Slovakia in 1900 according
to his baptism papers. The family was also Roman Catholics. According
to an Ohio census Anna was born about 1880 and I believe that at some
point Emericus changed his name to Henry and the 1910 federal Ohio
census says he was born about 1873. The family immigrated to America
through Ellis Island and settled in Ohio: Passenger list for the SS
Lahn dated 6 Dec 1900 shows the arrival of a Imre (or Emre) Vinka born
about 1873/74 coming from Zavod and going to Bellaire, Ohio. Pasenger
list for the SS Barbarossa dated 16 Feb 1905 shows the arrival of Anna
Vinka (born about 1880) and her son Vendol Vinka (born about 1900)
coming from Zavod and traveling to Emrich Vinka in Bellaire, Ohio.
There was also a Miklos Majzun traveling on the Barbarossa from Zavod.
There are also various Majzun and Vinka passengers traveling from Zavod
to the US during various years. Emericus and Anna Vinka left behind a
daughter named Helen or Helena born 1898 in Zavod with Emericus's
grandfather. She later married someone with the last name Sisolak -
first name possibly John. Vendelinus had his name changed to Wendel
Winko in Louisiana, 1923. Emericus had two sisters and I think their
names were Anna and Catherine. Emericus and Anna later had five more
children in Ohio: Mary, Joseph, John, Elizabeth, and Paul (who was
later adopted by the Radish family). I found a 1910 federal census with
the family in Ohio. I am looking for information about this family
while they resided in Zavod. Interested if there were any generations
that came from the left behind daughter (Helen or Helena). Also if
anything is know about previous generations. Dan Winko, e-mail (2007-03-13)

SLABEJ (Liptovský Mikuláš) - Náš starý
otec MUDr. Ján Slabej sa narodil 5.2.1866 vo Vrbickom Huštáku, dnes
súčasť mesta Lipt. Mikuláš. Bol to známy lekár a publicista. Zomrel
18.11.1945 v Bratislave. Mal 3 bratov (Július Bohumil nar. 2.1.1869,
Gustáv Adolf nar. 7.9.1871, Bohumír Miroslav nar. 7.11.1873). O ich
osudoch nevieme nič, s výnimkou toho, že bratia Gustáv Adolf a Bohumír
Miroslav sa v roku 1900 zasnúbili s dcérami prof. Karola Viesta z
Myjavy, sestrami Oľgou a Vierou. Keďže obidve zomreli v USA (Oľga 29.12.1948 v New-Yorku a Viera 6.8.1969 v
Sv. Mikuláši, zomrel 12.10.1898. Jeho rodičia boli: otec - Mathias
Szlabey, matka - Eva Schiricza. Naša prastará mama Zuzana Slabejová,
rod. Bacher sa narodila 5.6.1844 vo Vrbickom Huštáku,zomrela 8.11.1876

maternal grandmother was born. John's death certificate says that they
lived in Hungary. Family stories say that it is an area that later
became a part of Czechoslovakia, which is probably now Slovakia. Julia
Sojka (11 May 1915) in the USA. John Sojka b 1881 (d 17 Jan 1919 -

SOLČIANSKY - I was born in
Bratislava in 1948 but came to Australia when my parents emigrated here

SOMMER , see SOMOROVSKÝ
SOMOLANYI - My name is Jim
Vajda and I live in Ohio in the USA. My brother and I have been tracing
our Slovak ancestry for over a year. We have spent many hours and days
combing records and graves. Here's what we know about our ancestors
that immigrated from what is now Slovakia between 1888 and 1907. There
are three separate lines that trace back to Slovakia, all from western
Slovakia: Vajda, Somolanyi, and Jurina. - Vajda: Stephen Vajda, b. Aug
15, 1865 Csari, Nyitra, Kingdom of Hungary, Austria-Hungary, d. Feb 7,
1948 Ramapo, Rockland, New York, USA. Immigrated to USA about
1888-1889 (no immigration records found). He was a laborer in a pipe
factory in Orangeburg, New York, USA. Parents: Joseph (or John) Vajda
and Theresa Kormnorunif (unsure of spellings). - Somolanyi: Anna
Somolanyi, b. 1868-1872 Kuklo, Pozsony, Kingdom of Hungary,
Austria-Hungary, d. 1913 Rockland County, New York, USA. Immigrated to
USA about 1892 (no immigration records found). Parents: Anthony
Somolanyi and Theresa Voroh (unsure of spellings). - Jurina (or
Yurina): The Jurina's immigrated separately but all ended up reunited
in Rockland County, New York, USA. This leads me to believe that they
probably lived together before immigrating, perhaps in Szottina, where
Anna was born, or in Vittencz, where her grandfather Josef lived. -
Anna Justina Jurina, b. Apr 6, 1898 Szottina, Nyitra, Kingdom of
Hungary, Austria-Hungary, d. Jan 6, 1962, immigrated to USA Nov 18,
1907 aboard the S.S. Rhein from Bremen, Germany. She lived with her
grandfather Josef Jurina of Vittencz, Nyitra, before reuniting with her
family in Rockland County, New York, USA. Parents: Josef Jurina and
Ustina Kumick. - Josef Jurina, b. Nov 15, 1873 Austria-Hungary, d. Mar
22, 1921 Nyack, Rockland, New York, USA, Nyack Hospital. Immigrated to
USA 1904 (no immigration records found). He was a laborer in a pipe
factory in Orangeburg, New York, USA.Parents: Josef Jurina and
Katherine. - Ustina (Kumick) Jurina, b. 1877 Austria-Hungary, d. Apr
24, 1963. Immigrated to USA 1906 (no immigration records found).

SPIRA - My family emigrated from
Galicia to Slovakia in the early 19th century or perhaps the late 18th
century. I have been told that the name was Moskovits prior to
Schonfeld. The earliest name I have is Eliezer, father of Moshe
Schonfeld. Eliezer was a manager for Grof Csaky, and he must have
performed well since the Grof rewarded him with much land around Habura
and Palota. Moses (Mose) was born in
1807, probably in Habura. He lived in Habura and had four children
there,
when he moved his family to Medzilaborce (he had additional children
after
moving to Medzilaborce). Mose had a brother Schia who was born about
1798,
and he possibly had another brother Mendel. He may have had additional
siblings as well. Mose is known to have married the daughter of a
famous
Hasidic Rabbi, Rabbi Zvi Elimelech Spira originally of Dynow, Galicia.
Both Sarah and Mose were born in 1810 or earlier. Their tombstones can
be found in the Jewish cemetery in Medzilaborce. Louis Schonfeld, 5553

STANGA - I search for the
ancestors of my wife in Slovakia.
Susanna, *cca 1779, and Maria, * cca1785). 4th April 1800 died his wife
Elisabeth Sajler at the age of 36 years. With her he had a daughter
Elisabeth. 22th November 1802 he married Maria Waszka or Watzka. It
seems that Michael Stanga stayed in another, probably lutheran village
in his younger years. It is probable that there he married Sophia
Hasfay. Dr. Walter Büchi, Äschenthürlistrasse 18 b, CH-6030 Ebikon,

STAUROSKY - The name
Stavrovsky (another spelling) was created by the Russian Orthdox church
in the Ukraine in the late 1600's specifically for the clergy. They
took the Russian (Ukrainian) surname for cross ... Kressovskij ... and
converted to a Greek translation ... Stavrovskij. The name on my birth
and baptisimal certificate is Stavrovski without the j. I was told the
family was a dynasty of priests and cantors. Staurovsky's (another
spelling) were Greek Catholic in Slovakia. The G. C. church records for
Mark Cemerne only go back to 1811. The earliest birth record for
Staurovsky in these records was 1822. This family of Staurovsky
migrated between Mark Cemerne and Laborcz Volya (Vola) during the
1800's. My grandfather was Michael b. 12 November, 1891 in Mark
Cemerne. His father was Michael b. 6 January 1867 in Laborcz Volya.
This is father was Anton b. abt. 1835 in Mark Cemerne but lived in
Laborcz Volya.
His father is unknown...however, the oldest member of the Staurovsky's
in these church records was Joannes Sztavroszki (yet another spelling)
born in Pakaszto(Pakastov) b.abt. 1774 d. 10 April 1847. This was from
his death record where they do not list the actual birth date, just the
age. There was a priest, Petro Staurovsky in Pakastov during the
general time period of Joannes birth of 1774. My grandfather's
birth/baptisimal certificate reads Michal Staurosky (yet another
spelling). I have a copy of the original from 1891. I guess he needed
it to come to America, like a passport today. Veronica Stavrovski

Anna Stefanic came from in 1908. She was born in 1892, came to America

but also it might be the Czech. Also my grandfather came from Slovakia,
Josef (American spelling-Joseph) Nemic or Nemec - spelled both ways. I

census records from very shortly after they arrived in the US (circa

in the US began when my great-great grandparents Frank and Rosa

STEGENA (Starina) - I am doing genealogy
research on my wife's Slovak families.
A brother
John and sister Mary also came separately to America. A brother, George
remained in Slovakia and was last known to be working at a stamping
plant in Michalovce (?) – at age
64 (abt. 1978). While I have some information on these families,
research has been difficult because the old folks are gone and no one
now speaks Slovak. We have been trying to match up what we know
with some Slovak families now in Allentown, PA. These families were
Misik, Mishock Motsiks etc. My wife's folks considered thes families as
related. Would enjoy making contact and possibly sharing the lives of
these American immigrants with relatives still living in Slovakia.

STRBA - I´m looking for
informations about family´s grand-mother. Surnames: Reinitz-Rajnitz,
Horacek or Horacsek, Strba, Hajicek or Hajicsek, Krajicek or Hajicsek.
My grand-mother Julia(nna) Horacsekova was born in 1911 (°24/11/1911
BRATISLAVA, Staré Mesto). She came in France with her mother and her
half sisters and half brother about 1932. She married with Blanquet
Kléber (x 1932 in France). She lived in La Croix-Saint-Ouen (Oise,
France), then Compigne (Oise, France) and others places in Oise (a
department near Paris in France). Her brother was Jozef Horacek (°1913
Bratislava, + 1915 Hradna-Bratislava). Her mother was Maria Strbova
(Strba), also called Pauline Memniar (I don't know why, perhaps a
mistake in French civil register) (° 28/12/1893 Bratislava, + France).
Maria Strbova (Strba) married Stefan Horacek (or Stephanus Joannes
Horacsek) in Bratislava (°20/06/1888 Bratislava, +29/04/1944
Bratislava). He lived in Vahy-Bratislava. After some years they
divorced. Maria remaried with Pflandzer Edouard. Maria's parents are:
Strba Paul (Pavol) and Reinitz (or Rajnitz) Julianna. Stefan's parents
are: Horacek Jan (Jean) and Hajicekova or Krajicekova Maria. They are
from Veľké Leváre. I don't know if Stefan remarried. If he remarried,
perhaps he had others childrens. Also he should have brothers or
sisters. So, I'm searching informations about these persons, and about
their family. I would like to found cousins in Slovakia, in Europe, or
Canada or USA, or others parts of the world. Personally, I'm French and
I live in France. I know only few Slovak or Czech words, and my English
isn't perfect. Sorry for readers. You can contact me by mail to: e-mail or to adress postal: Family

okr. Giraltovce. V zozname deportovaných som našla meno Zeman (Eugen,
František, Ján, Margita – mohla by byť Viliamova sestra, Rozália –
do koncentračného tábora Auschwitz-Birkenau. Vieme, že niektorí z
rodiny mali palubné lístky do Ameriky, kam odišli. Žiaľ, to je všetko,
čo vieme. Katarína Švecová, 0905/829 240, e-mail (2008-02-21)

SZTAVROSZKI - The name
Stavrovsky (another spelling) was created by the Russian Orthdox church
in the Ukraine in the late 1600's specifically for the clergy. They
took the Russian (Ukrainian) surname for cross ... Kressovskij ... and
converted to a Greek translation ... Stavrovskij. The name on my birth
and baptisimal certificate is Stavrovski without the j. I was told the
family was a dynasty of priests and cantors. Staurovsky's (another
spelling) were Greek Catholic in Slovakia. The G. C. church records for
Mark Cemerne only go back to 1811. The earliest birth record for
Staurovsky in these records was 1822. This family of Staurovsky
migrated between Mark Cemerne and Laborcz Volya (Vola) during the
1800's. My grandfather was Michael b. 12 November, 1891 in Mark
Cemerne. His father was Michael b. 6 January 1867 in Laborcz Volya.
This is father was Anton b. abt. 1835 in Mark Cemerne but lived in
Laborcz Volya.
His father is unknown...however, the oldest member of the Staurovsky's
in these church records was Joannes Sztavroszki (yet another spelling)
born in Pakaszto(Pakastov) b.abt. 1774 d. 10 April 1847. This was from
his death record where they do not list the actual birth date, just the
age. There was a priest, Petro Staurovsky in Pakastov during the
general time period of Joannes birth of 1774. My grandfather's
birth/baptisimal certificate reads Michal Staurosky (yet another
spelling). I have a copy of the original from 1891. I guess he needed
it to come to America, like a passport today. Veronica Stavrovski

I’m from Hungary. I’m searching for my antecessors who lived in Banská

They used to be holding positions in the city’s leadership. When I was
